Mysticism is the pursuit of a direct and personal experiences with the divine, whether that be the idea of god, the universe, or the angelic realm. The goal is personal experiences with spirit rather than listening to someone else who’s sharing their experience.

In the modern world mystics walk upon us, mostly unaware of their gift and hidden power. No longer do we need prophets, sages, or saints to access the greater beyond, today we are so great in numbers that mysticism has become a natural way of being.

What is Mysticism

  • The Pursuit of union with God, absolute, higher consciousness
  • A spiritual orientation rooted in experience rather than belief
  • Found within many religions and philosophy
  • The direct experience of the divine
  • A path of inner transformation

Mysticism Defined (Dictionary Meaning)

The word mysticism comes from the greek word myein, meaning “to close the eyes” or “initiate into mystery”. Traditional dictionaries describe mysticism as – “The belief that union with or absorption into the Deity, or the absolute, or the spiritual apprehension of knowledge inaccessible to the intellect, may be attained through contemplation and self-surrender” – I don’t know about you but I think this definition is over complicated, which creates a barrier to entry and understanding.

Mysticism in Simple Terms

Mysticism is the experience of feeling directly connected to something greater than yourself. If religion was a guide that teaches you how to swim, mysticism would be you jumping into the water. It’s the next part of spiritual evolution that comes after discovery of the divine.

What is a Mystic?

A mystic is not someone who simply believes in God or a higher power. A mystic is the one who seeks to have direct connection with this source in every day life. A theologian studies the divine, a mystic attempts to encounter it. They appear in every major spiritual tradition. Most live in solitude, the rare exceptions become teachers, poets or saints sharing their experience of the divine through their work or art.

What Does it Mean To Be A Mystic?

To be a mystic means that your spiritual life is centred on experience rather than doctrine. it means:

  • You are drawn inward
  • You seek unity rather than division
  • You Value inner transformation over outer conformity
  • You prioritise direct awareness over second hand belief

Being a mystic is to see the world with an awareness of a deeper underlying reality and an attempt to connect to that. Its a shift in perception that leads to divine connection.

What does a Mystic Do?

Mystics engage in practices that cultivate awareness, silence and surrender. These often include :

  • Studying sacred texts
  • Contemplative prayer
  • Fasting or simplicity
  • Devotional chanting
  • Periods of solitude
  • Acts of service
  • Meditation

These can vary by culture but the aim remains consistent – Quiet the ego and shift consciousness to develop awareness of the deeper dimensions of reality.

Traits of a Mystic

While mystics are diverse, characteristics appear repeatedly across traditions :

  • Strong Intuition
  • Deep introspection
  • Emotional Sensitivity
  • Tolerance for solitude
  • Compassion rooted in unity
  • Detachment from ego driven ambition

Mystics often feel different early in life, they are less concerned with proving something and more concerned with understanding.

Signs You are a Mystic

You may resonate with mysticism if

  • You crave a connection with the divine
  • You are drawn to silence more than spectacle
  • You question surface-level explanations of reality
  • You are a Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio, or have heavy water placements in the natal chart you will be more inclined towards mysticism

Core Elements of Mysticism

Across traditions, mystical paths tend to include five recurring elements.

Direct Experience of the Divine

Mysticism prioritises experience over belief.

This may feel like:

  • A feeling you are never alone
  • Overwhelming presence
  • Profound stillness
  • Boundless love

Union with God or the Absolute

Many mystics dissolve the separation between the self and the ultimate reality. In some religions this may be described as a one on one connection to God, in others it’s described as realising there was never a separation in the first place. – If our spirit was a drop in the ocean, the ocean is the greater source, meaning we are one and the same, the rain drop is part of the sea just waiting to return.

Inner Transformation

Mystical experienced is not pursued for sensation, it leads to great transformation such as:

  • Increased humility
  • Greater compassion
  • Emotional Purification
  • Reduced ego-centered behaviour

Ego Transcendence

Transcending the ego means to loosen our identification with

  • Roles
  • Titles
  • Narratives
  • Self Image
  • The Status Quo

Higher Consciousness

Mystical traditions frequently describe expanded states of awareness such as

  • Timelessness
  • Unity Perception
  • Heightened clarity
  • Profound Inner Silence

Mysticism in Religion

Mysticism is not outside or separate from religion, it’s actually the highest level of consciousness within religion. While all religions seem to differ, the end goal is always mysticism.

Christian Mysticism (Gnosis)

Jesus Christ arguably the most famous mystic to ever live. In multiple religions they await the return of the prophet, this is not someone who will incarnate into a physical body to set things straight.

The return means that the state of mind the prophets shared would be common among society, ie. When we all discover mysticism and align with their characteristics then the spirit of the prophet is able to work through us.

When more people have the direct connection with source that is when the prophets will return. The great news is prophets are everywhere, they  may just need guidance to help them awaken.

Christian mysticism often centres around love, surrender and purification. The esoteric symbolism within the bible heavily refers to astrology and the rise of kundalini.

The seven sins and 10 commandments are guiding principles for how to operate safely when psychic senses are activated and ability to communicate with the divine is unlocked.

Jewish Mysticism (Kabbalah)

Jewish mysticism explores the hidden dimensions of our divine reality, focusing on sacred symbolism and the restoration of spiritual unity.

They follow the tree of life which is a map for spiritual growth that helps to understand the souls journey from the material back to the divine. This is often used as a tool for self discovery.

The tree of life also shares associations with the astrological planets and elements. The story of Moses in the bible also shares esoteric symbolism of kundalini awakening.

Sufi Mysticism (Islam)

Sufi mysticism is rooted in the inner dimension or Islam and the pursuit of direct experiential knowledge of Allah (God). Sufi’s interpret the prophetic experiences of Muhammad as the foundation of the mystical path. Mohammad received divine revelation through the angel Gabriel while meditating in the Cave of Hira. This direct revelation is referred to as wahy which is a direct transmission with Allah (God) .Where islamic law governs external behaviour, Sufism seeks purification of the heart. Dhikr is the remembrance of God, Fana is annihilation of the ego and Baqa is the subsistence in God.

While Im no expert on islamic doctrine, all sacred books can be interpreted symbolically and metaphorically. 24:35 describes Allah as “Light upon Light”, a mystic would view this a symbolic, metaphorical and allegorical and then be called to forge a deeper understanding of what is actually being said beneath the surface.

Hindu & Buddhist Mysticism

Unlike Abrahamic traditions, Hindu & Buddhist mysticism does not centre around a single prophet receiving revelation from a personal god. In Hindu philosophy, mystical experience is often described as relation between the individual self (Atman) and ultimate reality (Brahman).

In Buddhism, mystical experience centers around awakening (bodhi). Again there is no communication from a divine being, but more so penetrating insights into the nature of reality and consciousness. Practitioners often seek to experience, emptiness, non-duality and freedom from ego illusion.

Islamism, Judaism & Islamism all centre around divine encounter. Hinduism is unity with the ultimate reality and buddhism is awakening from Illusion. The common thread they share is a transformation of consciousness that transcends ordinary perception.

Mysticism Vs Religion

Religion provides structure, mysticism seeks first hand encounters with spirit.

Institutional Religion Vs Direct Experience

Institutional religion organises belief systems, establishes rituals and rules. Mysticism seeks personal encounters and move beyond rigid interpretation into symbolic, metaphor and allegorical understanding that prioritises inner transformation.

Can you be Religious & A Mystic

Yes, many mystics were deeply religious. Mysticism does not reject faith, instead it deepens in through direct experience.

How Does Mysticism Work

Mysticism works through the transformation of consciousness. It’s not about adopting beliefs, but more so about shifting perception. Moving from ordinary ego based, analytical awareness to a state of unity with all.

Often mysticism follows patterns

  • Preparation with periods of purification, discipline and surrender
  • A breakthrough experience such as awakening or revelations
  • Altered and elevated states of consciousness
  • An integration into daily life

Outer practices can vary but the inner movement is consistent in loosening the ego identity and awakening of a deeper awareness.

Mysticism Vs Psychic Abilities

Psychic abilities relate to the perception of subtle information, mysticism relates to a transformation of consciousness. A psychic may perceive beyond the senses, the mystic dissolves the sense of separation itself.

States of Consciousness

Mysticism assumes that ordinary waking awareness is not the highest form of consciousness. Most spiritual traditions describe multiple states:

  • Dream and symbolic consciousness
  • Ordinary waking consciousness
  • Deep contemplative absorption
  • Ecstatic or visionary states
  • Unity consciousness

Time may feel suspended, the sense of separate self may dissolve and reality may appear to be interconnected or synchronistic.

The Role of Meditation

Meditation assists in raising our awareness, it slows mental activity, reduces our identification with our thoughts. Through the quieting of the mind we create more space for divine thoughts to enter our awareness.

Jesus said to go within to seek connection with God, by removing the noise you open the doors to the temple. All abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islamism) prophets,  received their revolutionary insights during meditation in caves or mountain tops, not a church.

Contemplation & Devotion

Meditation quiets the mind, devotion softens the heart, both leading to the transcendence of ego. Muhammad spent long periods in retreat and remembrance before revelation begin. Elijah wandered for 40 days and 40 nights. Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights. Moses fasted for 40 days and nights while receiving the Ten Commandments. Noah experienced 40 days of rain during the flood.

Numerology is the study of numbers and the deeper meanings, as you can probably see there is a pattern, I’ll discuss the numerology within sacred texts in another post.

Mystical Experience Explained

Mystical experiences typically include several core elements

  • A sense of unity or oneness
  • Transendance of time and space
  • Deep peace or overwhelming love
  • A feeling of encountering ultimate reality
  • Ineffability (difficulty describing it in language)

After mystical experiences people often report

  • Greater compassion
  • Reduced fear of death
  • Increased sense of meaning
  • Less attachment to ego identity

Can Anyone Become A Mystic?

Yes, we can all have our own experiences with the divine. Most people who develop regular meditation practice will likely have a profound mystical experience, over time these will shift the consciousness to a higher state of awareness that you’ll never be able to unlearn.

How to become a Mystic?

Traditionally it requires:

  • Patience
  • Moral purification
  • Regular spiritual practice
  • Detachment from ego-driven desire
  • Guidance from a teacher or scripture

If you require one on one guidance with a UK mystic, check out my services such as a breakthrough call or astrology reading to understand your souls design.

How to Practice Mysticism

Common mystical practice includes

  • -Silent meditation
  • -Ethical purification
  • -Contemplative Prayer
  • -Self Inquiry (Who am I)
  • -Contemplation of scripture

Without humility and ethical grounding, mystical practice can become ego inflation rather than transcendence.

Is Mysticism Dangerous?

Mysticism can be destabilising when pursued without grounding or shadow work. With any pursuit we must learn to master the mind and learn to walk safely within the higher realms of consciousness.

As mentioned before the 7 sins and 10 commandments became guidelines for operating safely as a psychic or a mystic. Without these we can attract demonic entities that interfere with our reality.

Ie. If you are gluttonous, this is a lust for food, lust is an open doorway to lower astral entities that feed on that energy source. They will whisper and tempt you into consuming more and more, without discernment we may think these are our natural urges when in fact it could be a spiritual entity praying on your downfall.

When Did Mysticism Begin?

Mysticism appears as early as recorded human spirituality, Ancient Hebrew, Upanishads, Greek philosophy, Ancient Egypt, and all the way back to ancient Sumerian. Mysticism seems to emerge whenever humans seek direct contact with the ultimate reality so it is not confined to one era or culture.
